Industry Association: Illuminating Engineering Society of Australia and New Zealand (IES)
Society Profile
The Illuminating Engineering Society of Australia was formed in NSW in October 1930. Those involved came from a broad spectrum of disciplines: the generation and distribution of electricity, the lighting industry, optometrists and architects.
By the end of 1949, regional societies in all the mainland states had been formed. In June 1991, the Illuminating Engineering Society of New Zealand joined the national council in forming the Illuminating Engineering Society of Australia and New Zealand Inc.
On 1 July 2002, the Society changed from an incorporated body to the Illuminating Engineering Society of Australia and New Zealand Ltd, with a board of nine representing the Chapters in Australia and New Zealand. Its logo represents the various segments of lighting, viz. residential, commercial, road lighting, floodlighting, theatrical, daylighting, etc. Its new user-friendly name is "IES: The Lighting Society".
The vision of the Society is to promote the art and science of lighting, encourage professionalism in its practice and establish and maintain standards for its application.
Education
A number of universities and TAFE colleges across Australia and New Zealand provide access to the professional lighting courses accredited by IES: The Lighting Society.
Members regularly lecture at these institutions and the subjects covered include, but are not limited to:
• The nature and quality of light
• Energy management and calculation techniques
• Interior and exterior lighting
• Emergency lighting
• Daylighting and applications
IES: The Lighting Society also provides entry-level education courses suitable for a wide range of people with an interest in lighting. See www.iesanz.org for more details.
Professional Development
Members attend professional development courses and seminars on the latest developments in lighting practice. The various Chapters hold regular technical meetings and seminars at which original and review papers are given by members or invited speakers (local and overseas). A biennial Lighting Convention, held over two days, provides a forum at which a multiplicity of topics is discussed and new ideas promoted.
Lighting Standards
Lighting standards published by Standards Australia are compiled with advice from IES. The standards which play a role in the landscape industry include:
• AS4282 – "Control of the obtrusive effects of outdoor lighting"
• AS1158 – "SAA Public Lighting Code"
• AS2560 – "Guide to Sports Lighting"
IES members are also kept up to date with international codes and trends through the Society's affiliation with CIE Australia, which is Australia's voice on the setting of international lighting standards.
