Industry Association: Australian Institute of Landscape Architects (AILA)

Association Profile
The Australian Institute of Landscape Architects (AILA) is the peak professional body for Landscape Architects, that oversees the registration of professional Landscape Architects in Australia.

AILA's Vision
AILA provides the primary leadership, structure and
network to effectively harness and focus the intellectual energy of Australian landscape architects in the creation of more meaningful, enjoyable, equitable and sustainable environments.

Landscape architecture and the built environment, increasing urbanisation and growing pressures on natural systems, reflect a complex set of environmental, social, physical, economic, aesthetic and cultural forces. Achieving effective and sustainable outcomes in the built and natural environment requires an integrated response. The public domain, in which the majority of landscape architects operate, plays an increasingly important role as the venue for social interaction, celebration and human endeavour. Consequently it is essential that the public domain incorporates places that are meaningful, delightful and equitable for the public who use them. Landscape architects play a leading role in defining and implementing such integrated solutions.

The Institute
To fulfill their leadership role, landscape architects need to be not only creative in planning and design but also effective in influencing policy, priorities, allocation of resources and public perceptions and expectations. The AILA provides the organisational structure through which landscape architects in Australia effectively respond to these challenges.

The commitment of AILA to lifelong learning is reflected through a program of continued professional development and support for the accredited programs of landscape architecture at universities around Australia.
The national office, located in Canberra, is responsible for coordinating the delivery of membership services, implementation of National Council decisions and collaboration with the State Chapters that serve AILA members at a local level.

Services include registration of Landscape Architects in Australia, advocacy, education, continuing professional development, communications, environment and community liaison, which are delivered through 'Landscape Australia', the AILA national and state web sites, 'Landmark' (the national newsletter), national conferences, national and state awards and regular emailed communications.

AILA advocates the interests of its members through membership of the International Federation of Landscape Architects (IFLA) and the Australian Council of Building Design Professionals (BDP).
