TOORAK INFRASTRUCTURE

28 Mar 2018

In the heart of Melbourne along one of the tram network's busiest routes, Stoddart Infrastructure recently completed the successful delivery and installation of 10 Evo Shelters.

Stoddart designed and fabricated the structures for Yarra Trams, equating to approximately 150 square metres of roof coverage on the Toorak Road West project, along St. Kilda Road. The company worked with Baron Forge to project manage the delivery and installation of an essential part of the important upgrade to the public transport infrastructure of the area.

Located at the juncture of the Royal Botanical Gardens, Albert Park Lake and Fawkner Park, as well as nearby schools, businesses, and private residences, these structures will cater for a huge volume of people – including the new Metro Tunnel – in the years to come.

The flexibility of the Evo shelter design, as evidenced by the wealth of previous projects with Yarra Trams, was essential to seamlessly integrate the range of features necessary to cater for such a large and diverse patron set. These standard features include: LED courtesy lighting, advertising lightboxes, PID units, MYKI boxes, and various-length seating with arm rests, in shelters of both 4 metre and 8 metre lengths, in both single- and double-sided roof configurations.

The ongoing functionality of the shelters was also a high priority for this project. Mains power and data/communication feeds are supplied into the structures via dedicated accessible cavities within the posts through the footings, which were required to integrate the various platform designs. The shelter baseplates are recessed into pockets within the footing, both to allow for variation in ground slope and reduce tripping hazards.

The drainage is similarly managed from the full length rear gutter to the surface at the base of each post. The shelters are therefore ready to perform immediately and allow for future upgrades to suit the changing landscape of a growing Melbourne.

The ability of Stoddart to consistently provide Yarra Trams with a highly functional, aesthetic, and robust product over a long period of time, is echoed on public transport networks all across Australia, and is just one part of the end-to-end service Stoddart is well known for.

Stoddart looks forward to the ongoing success of these shelters and the next stage of their partnership with Yarra Trams.
