CRAFTING CONNECTION AT 88 O'CONNELL
19 Nov 2025
Spark Furniture delivered bespoke concrete and timber elements for Adelaide’s landmark mixed-use development.
After decades as an empty lot, the former Le Cornu site at 88 O’Connell Street has been transformed into one of South Australia’s most anticipated urban precincts. Delivered by Commercial & General with Tandem Building Group and designed by Woods Bagot, 88 O’Connell brings together premium residences, restaurants, and community spaces in a striking three-tower development that has redefined the northern edge of the city of Adelaide.
At the heart of the new precinct’s public and private outdoor areas sits custom designed and manufactured furniture by Spark Furniture. Spark are a South Australian manufacturer specialising in street furniture and public-realm infrastructure. Spark was engaged to develop a value-managed design solution for a series of raised glass-reinforced concrete (GRC) planters incorporating seating elements from oiled hardwood Spotted Gum timber battens and integrated LED lighting.
Installed at both ground level and the elevated Level 2 terrace, these sculptural planter and furniture elements form the backbone of the precinct’s landscaped zones—defining edges, guiding movement, and providing comfortable places for residents, staff, and visitors to gather. The softened geometry and colouring of the GRC finish complement the architectural palette, while the natural warmth of the timber seating introducing a tactile, human-scale contrast. At night, subtle linear lighting accentuates form and function, ensuring the furniture enhances the ambience and usability of the outdoor areas after dark.
Working closely with the project team, Spark Furniture refined the design for manufacturability, durability, and cost efficiency without compromising on the architectural intent. Each planter module was fabricated locally in South Australia, underscoring Spark’s commitment to Australian manufacturing and sustainable production. The combination of precision-cast GRC and sustainably sourced hardwood delivers longevity suited to a high-traffic, mixed-use environment.
Through projects like 88 O’Connell, Spark Furniture continues to demonstrate how thoughtful design and local expertise can shape welcoming, enduring public spaces. The result is furniture that not only meets practical needs but also contributes to the broader identity and experience of this new North Adelaide landmark.
