PIRATE PLAY AT PALM BEACH

The City of Gold Coast commissioned a custom new and improved pirate themed playground that celebrates many iconic play and discovery features whilst elevating the park to an entirely new level of play and adventure for the community.

Located on the northern edge of the beautiful Currumbin Creek, this project needed to be as iconic as the natural area surrounding it.

In response to this challenge, WillPlay and Zone Landscape Architecture designed a custom pirate ship totally unique to the project set within an ocean adventurescape for all ages. The large-scale pirate ship sits within a circular ‘compass’ perimeter pathway which forms the framework for multiple engagement areas designed for different ages and physical abilities. The central crow’s nest reaches over 10 metres into the air and elevates the adventurer above the canopy of trees below and gaze out onto the picturesque parkland. The ship features hidden cargo holds for the younger shipmates as well an elevated crow’s nests, rope bridges and slides for the more adventurous users.

The ship has multiple play elements set within a large seascape with whirl pools, walk the plank and a cableway from the back of the ship allowing an escape to ‘dry land’.

For those less daring there are multiple chill out zones including sensory play such as giant chimes, custom crates, dinghys, cannons and hammocks, all shaded by large existing trees.

Designed for fun, adventure and most importantly a place for families and friends to gather and enjoy the great outdoors together. The Australian-made structures throughout the playspace by Willplay will stand tall for many generations to come, keeping the community coming back for more adventures on the high seas of kid’s imaginations. Working closely with principal contractor Boyds Bay Group, the end result not only looks spectacular, it is a ship load of fun!
