BOLLARDS THAT SHINE

29 Jun 2017

As a preferred supplier to the City of Melbourne, TRJ Engineering has successfully won a tender to fabricate 39 mirror-finish Finn Bollards to help shape the streetscape of Melbourne.

The strength of TRJ Engineering’s capabilities lies in its ability to fabricate a product completely inhouse, where they have complete control of the process from A to Z. Having been successfully commissioned by City of Melbourne to create a series of bollards, TRJ set about fabricating the aluminium Finn Bollards to client specs.

The Finn Bollard form is laser cut from an aluminium sheet folded in half. From there, the TRJ press shop presses the two halves together in order for a team of highly skilled inhouse tradesman to fabricate together, along with all the necessary internals.

There are two distinct types of bollards in the Finn series, those that are removable and those that are permanently fixed. Both models have a galvanised mild steel internal frame for added strength; however, the removable bollards include a mechanism that connects it to the base. It is an intricate yet strong assembly of levers, springs and locks that allow local councils to remove them as needed.

After fabrication, the commissioned bollards were polished to a mirror-finish and appropriate City of Melbourne stickers were added to complete the project.

In addition to the fabrication of the Finn Bollards, TRJ has been asked to sort through old waste bins that have been removed from the Melbourne CBD.

After many seasons out in the weather, these bins have finally succumbed to the infamous ‘four seasons in one day’ elements of Melbourne. Although on the outside these bins might look good, on the inside they have rusted out. Some of these bins might just need minor repairs and re-powdercoating, others will need to be completely replaced.

As these waste receptacles were fabricated by a variety of manufacturers over the years, they have deteriorated at different rates - this would be due to the difference in material type, thicknesses and fabrication technique, as well as the quality of the final coating. As it looks like most of the bin lids look like they have fared well, it may be that a quick repolish and new stickers are all that is required to get them back into circulation.

TRJ Engineering is proud to have earned the opportunity to be able to help City of Melbourne supply, replace and retrofit street furniture so that it may continue to serve the citizens of Melbourne.
