Taking Barden Ridge from unmediated bushland to regulated greenspace, Auscape tamed the landscape and created a community destination complete with picnic grounds and a dynamic playspace.
Opened in December 2017 by Mayor Carmelo Pesce at a well-attended community event, Barden Ridge Reserve offers the local area a much needed recreation space. The large open greenspace includes a bike and scooter track, shaded pavilions with picnic tables and seating, and a well-shaded inclusive playground that features an adventure fort, swings and rope climbing tower, among other things.
Commission by Sutherland Shire Council to turn a gravel wasteland into a public recreation area, landscape contractors Auscape managed the design and construction of all aspects of the project, working from concept to completion.
A special aspects of the construction of the reserve included the participation of senior students from the nearby Lucas Heights Community School. As part of a six month work experience program, Year 11 students from the school were given the opportunity to help in the building of the park, given them a vested interest in the community project and providing them with new skills under the professional direction of Auscape.
Site works undertaken by Auscape include:
- Site clearing
- Filling to design levels
- Drainage, including dry creek bed
- Subgrade preparation
- Sandstone log construction
- Engage and manage complete playground construction, liaising with softfall and artificial grass contractor and fencing contractor
- 12 month establishment maintenance
Now a space the region can be proud of, Barden Ridge Reserve is a successful project that demonstrates the fruitful collaboration between Auscape and their team of qualified subcontractors and Sutherland Shire Council.
During the intervening 12 months, the greenspace has grown lusher, with plants maturing and the park settling more comfortably into the landscape. Well received by locals and still widely-used by the community today, Barden Ridge Reserve is a triumph for the region.
