Subtle interventions at Beauty Spot Memorial Park, Carrum (City of Kingston, VIC)

Not every landscape or urban design needs bold architectural gestures to make an impact. Sometimes, subtle, well-considered interventions are all it takes to enhance placemaking and strengthen a site’s identity. Beauty Spot Memorial Park, developed by the City of Kingston in Carrum, is a compelling example of this approach, balancing heritage and renewal in an iconic war memorial park.
At this site, no major structures were added, yet the transformation is clear. A semi-rigid pavement path now guides visitors through the park, inviting them to explore the memorial elements and the native sensory garden. The route strengthens the park’s openness and creates a contemplative connection between various commemorative features.
To complement this soft intervention, the park now includes new bike racks and an FSC-certified hardwood seating feature. These pieces were supplied by Streetlife Australia Pty Ltd, a locally based designer and manufacturer of high-quality urban furniture, with production in NSW, Australia. The choice of minimal yet robust materials supports the park’s natural character without distracting from its purpose.
A standout design feature is the Rough&Ready Tree Isle, a modular planter system made of weathering steel, customised in both form and dimension. The angled, sloping walls were tailored to the landscape plan, helping the feature blend seamlessly into its surroundings. The prefabricated system also offered efficient installation on-site, reducing construction impact.
Streetlife, originally a Dutch company, combines architecture and industrial design with a commitment to natural, durable materials. Beyond sourcing FSC-certified tropical hardwood to support responsible forestry, the company invests in local partnerships and manufacturing—ensuring that sustainability extends across its supply chain and operations. A key strength of Streetlife lies in its ability to customise projects in close collaboration with landscape architects and designers, allowing their products to be seamlessly adapted to each site’s specific design language and spatial needs.
Beauty Spot Memorial Park demonstrates how landscape architecture can elevate everyday spaces, offering moments for reflection, remembrance, and community connection. The restrained design language, thoughtful use of materials, and locally made furniture all contribute to a peaceful and enduring public space.
