Dynamic lighting for the Royal Adelaide Showgrounds was an illuminating challenge

The Royal Adelaide Showgrounds is the city’s largest multi-purpose venue. It offers spectacular event spaces, state-of-the-art meeting rooms and quality visitor facilities. Situated in the heart of Adelaide the venue hosts numerous shows and exhibitions throughout the year including the Royal Adelaide Show and the prestigious Royal Adelaide Wine Show.

The project to upgrade the lighting around the entrance of the Showground had the brief of a highly dynamic and innovative entrance.
The key was to create a strong first impression of the venue and setting a vibrant mood. A further request from the client was quality high tier products that offered low energy consumption.

With Thorn already having successfully completed two other stages of the Royal Adelaide Showgrounds – King's Way Boulevard and Main Boulevard – the management of the Showground appointed Thorn to design, supply and commission the lighting for the Rose Terrance Entrance stage of the project.

The project comprised the installation of 23 colour-changing LED Promenade bollards to create a 'wow' factor for the entrance. In addition there were 40 Lemnis luminaires for the Boulevard to highlight the entrance and provide illumination for the pedestrian traffic that the showground receives. The project also utilised Thorn’s QBA floodlights, Contrast Pin Spots and Troika floodlights to add to the ambience of the showground, highlight the entrances and provide illumination for the foot traffic; allowing people to move through the area safely with excellent vision.

The key feature for the project was the colour-changing LED Promenade bollards – creating a soft and dynamically lit themed pathway which leads visitors to the entrance of the Showground.

By employing the dynamics of LED colour change, Thorn Lighting was able to enhance the social dimension and stimulate the evening ambience for The Adelaide Showground. Furthermore, by utilising Thorn’s PEC – Performance, Efficiency and Comfort – philosophy, Thorn was able to deliver the right lighting levels at the right place and at the right time.
