GRAHAME STEWART PARK INCLUSIVE PLAYGROUND

The junior play area at Grahame Stewart Park (Sunshine Coast), Queensland, was upgraded to provide much better public play facilities that enable children with special needs to have fun alongside their siblings and friends. The playground features attractive, inclusive, accessible and sensory Proludic play equipment, along with a refurbished existing play train. The installation of pathways, accessible rubber surfacing, shade and seating has also been carefully considered to allow for easy access to the play equipment, and to provide a safe and comfortable place for everyone to play and relax together.

Proludic’s inclusively designed Vivarea Multi Play includes many play activities inside and outside of the equipment. This helps with the development of children’s gross motor skills, fine motor skills and cognitive abilities whilst also providing sensory stimulation. Accessibility for all children to the heart of the structure is enabled by the presence of a ramp, large platforms and a wide staircase. A double-width slide allows two children to slide side-by-side, or with the support of an accompanying adult. Buckets, pulleys, sieves and pipes encourage children to play with and handle sand, an enormously beneficial activity. The presence of all the play features on the large platforms encourages children to play together and develop their social skills – without them even realising it!

Sensory play environments are crucial to a child’s development, and moving and spinning play equipment provide great levels of sensory and motor stimulation for all children. Proludic’s rotating Wheelspin offers all children the liberating experience of dynamic movement. It is accessible to children in wheelchairs or those who use mobility aids. The seat and back rests are helpful for children who require postural support, and there is plenty of room for a parent, friend or carer to sit beside their child. The flush ground level access and textured floor surface also allows children with visual impairments to easily feel their way onto the Wheelspin.

Proludic’s popular Pod Swing has a large pod seat that provides a comfortable, supportive surface for swinging in a lying or seated position. It can be used for gentle rocking alone or with a friend, or by groups of very active children for dynamic, exciting swinging!

Additional inclusive play equipment that supports sensory, social and imaginative play includes the Face-to-Face springer (designed for use by two children at once), The House (for imaginative play and restful retreat), a Sand Sieve and Sand Digger (for additional sand play activities), the Maze and Flipper play panels (to encourage observation, concentration and hand-eye coordination).

Other recreation facilities are also available at Grahame Stewart Park, making it a wonderful place to play for the whole community.
