WORKING WITH A WHOLESALE NURSERY TO BUY ADVANCED TREES OR MATURE TREES

16 Jan 2012

When working with a wholesale nursery, it’s important to understand a few things about advanced trees and mature trees.

Whether you are involved in urban reforestation or planting trees in a residential area, advanced trees and mature trees can offer some significant benefits. When working with a wholesale nursery, it’s important to understand a few things about advanced trees and mature trees prior to making a purchase or breaking ground for planting.

Advanced Trees

Advanced trees are simply trees that have grown beyond the sapling stage. These are often about 5-7 years of age. Advanced trees are available with root balls in planting sacks from a wholesale nursery in most instances, though mature trees that have reached a greater age are not stored in this way.

Mature Trees

Mature trees are really advanced trees that have reached a greater maturity. Mature trees are usually between 10 and 20 years of age, and have a fully developed root system and have usually reached their maximum height. Most mature trees are ground planted and will remain in the ground until a wholesale nursery receives an order for immediate delivery.

Why Are Advanced Trees and Mature Trees Used?

Why might you choose to use advanced trees or mature trees in place of saplings? If the area in which you are planting is already established, chances are good that you will need to use advanced trees or mature trees to match the other trees in the area. For example, if the area has been developed for 10 years and you need to replace existing trees damaged by a strong storm, you’ll need to shop with a wholesale nursery to find an advanced tree that roughly matches the age of the trees already established in the area. The same concept holds true for mature trees.

Finding the Right Wholesale Nursery

You’ll find that not every wholesale nursery offers advanced trees and mature trees. In addition, it’s important to work with a wholesale nursery that has extensive knowledge of planting and care concerns for advanced trees and mature trees. Unlike saplings, which can often thrive with minimal care, the age of these trees means that they will require different watering and greater care for the first few years after planting in order to ensure that they adapt to their new environment.

Look for a wholesale nursery that offers ground planted advanced trees and mature trees, rather than one that has “ready-to-go” options, as these are sometimes unhealthy from being out of the ground for a long time.
