Construction will be staged over six years, starting with the park, Culture House, supermarket and retail spaces, childcare centre (subject to approvals), a medical precinct, and the first wave of commercial and residential areas.
WORK BEGINS ON SYDNEY'S NEW '5-MINUTE' CITY
02 Sep 2025
Construction has begun on Burwood Place, a landmark $2.5-billion mixed-use precinct in the heart of Burwood. The build will deliver more than 1,000 homes, cultural infrastructure, retail and green spaces to Sydney’s Inner West.
Developed by Holdmark in consultation with Burwood Council and the local community, Burwood Place will create a true '5-minute city', a cultural hub where connected city living meets round-the-clock convenience.
Official ground was broken in the final week of August, with the ceremony led by NSW Premier Chris Minns and Minister for Planning and Public Spaces Paul Scully, alongside Burwood Mayor John Faker, Strathfield MP Jason Yat-sen Li, and Federal Member for Reid Sally Sitou.
To be delivered in stages over the next six years by a team of award-winning architects, Burwood Place opens a new chapter in the evolution of the Inner West. The landmark urban hub, strategically positioned midway between Sydney and Parramatta CBDs, will be well connected, thanks to its proximity to key transit corridors including Burwood Train Station and the planned Burwood North Metro, part of the Sydney Metro West line due to open in 2032.
With this level of accessibility, the project is positioned to become a major driver of local employment and investment. Burwood Place is expected to generate more than 5,000 jobs – including 1,700 during construction and a further 3,300 once operational – and contribute over $750 million annually to the local economy.
The planned precinct will offer:
- 1,041 new homes across four buildings, including affordable and adaptable housing
- over 5,000sqm of public space, including a town square and urban park
- a new library and Cultural House for community use
- a pedestrian-friendly walkway to connect residents to the new library and civic core
- 27,000sqm of retail, medical and fresh food space
- 14,000sqm of commercial space, including A-grade offices
- an entertainment precinct
- seven basement parking levels with EV charging stations.
Holdmark CEO Kevin Nassif described Burwood Place as a project that “brings together best-practice urban design and community-led placemaking that will see it set a new benchmark for mixed-use urban hubs in Sydney.”
