Infrastructure Australia is the Australian Government’s independent advisor on nationally significant transport, water, energy, communications and social infrastructure investment planning and project prioritisation.
The work involves two main streams. The first is to evaluate nationally significant infrastructure proposals or proposals that are seeking investment from the Australian Government of $250 million or more. The second component is to develop research and advice to support better infrastructure decision-making, including identifying opportunities for reform. Copp's reappointment will ensure stability and continuity in the senior leadership of IA, delivering independent evidence-based advice on infrastructure projects that supports the economy and builds the nation.
"Over recent years, Infrastructure Australia has undergone significant transformation. Following legislative reforms that strengthened our mandate as the Australian Government's independent infrastructure adviser, we have sharpened our focus on supporting better infrastructure investment decisions and identifying opportunities to improve outcomes for communities across Australia.
Together with stakeholders across government, industry and the broader infrastructure sector, we have delivered a number of significant milestones. Most recently, we released a new Infrastructure Priority List to help guide nationally significant infrastructure investment over the coming decade. We have also strengthened our research and advisory work, including through the Infrastructure Market Capacity program, helping connect local insights with Australian Government investment decisions and shape responses to challenges and opportunities such as housing growth, the energy transition, workforce constraints and infrastructure resilience.
One of Infrastructure Australia's greatest strengths is its ability to bring together expertise from across the infrastructure ecosystem. Governments, industry leaders, investors, operators, researchers, peak bodies, and stakeholders from construction, materials supply, workforce development and the broader infrastructure supply chain all play an important role in shaping our work. I would like to sincerely thank everyone who has contributed their expertise, perspectives and experience over recent years.
Australia is at an infrastructure inflection point. Population growth, housing supply, freight productivity, the energy transition, climate resilience, workforce pressures, defence capability requirements and changing geopolitical and economic conditions are reshaping the nation's infrastructure needs. At the same time, emerging priorities such as digital infrastructure, artificial intelligence and data centres are creating new challenges and opportunities that will require careful planning and coordination across governments and industry.
These factors are at the forefront as we develop the next phase of our work program, including consultation on the next iteration of the Infrastructure Priority List and engagement with industry on the future direction of our Market Capacity program and 2026 Market Capacity Report.
I encourage you to remain involved in this work, whether by contributing insights, participating in consultations, sharing emerging challenges and opportunities, or helping us test and strengthen our thinking. The quality of our advice is enhanced by the expertise and perspectives of those working across the infrastructure ecosystem.
I am excited about the next chapter for Infrastructure Australia and the opportunities ahead. Together with our Commissioners, staff and stakeholders, we will continue shaping the infrastructure decisions that support Australia's productivity, sustainability and resilience for decades to come.
Thank you for your ongoing partnership, support and engagement.
Best regards,
Adam Copp
