Skidmore, Owings and Merrill (SOM) alongside not-for-profit group Urban Rivers has completed the first phase of the Wild Mile on the Chicago River. With an aim to promote outdoor active learning, recreational activities and creating stronger communities’ bonds, the Wild Mile project is a sustainable and eco-friendly public space addition to Chicago. With opportunities to learn about the surrounding ecosystems and guided kayaking tours by Shedd Aquarium along the Chicago River, Wild Mile is a step for positive environmental changes in Chicago.

The first phase began in 2016 and opened to the public in June 2022. The first phase included aluminium framed floating docks supporting the wooden paths made from the chemically modified timber, Kebony, allowing pedestrians to stroll peacefully along the riverbank. Chicago Botanic Garden specialists joined the project to select 60 native plants to accompany the walkway. The chosen plant life will thrive in the water environment and help with pollination and bird nesting, allowing a great opportunity for children to discover different flora and fauna.

The next phase of Wild Mile will include a 122-metre-long stretch of waterfront boardwalks with a suite of floating gardens, public walkways much like phase one, and kayaking docks for recreational use.
