The Victorian Pride Centre

Selected from a design competition, Brearley Architects & Urbanists (BAU) and Grant Amon Architects (GAA) designed this multipurpose architectural structure as a haven for the LGBTQI+ community and a flexible workspace building.

Located on Fitzroy St in St Kilda, VPC is a structural masterpiece. Made from raw structural concrete, the exterior of the building is welcoming and has been designed to integrate into the surrounding St Kilda streetscape. Once inside, the heart of the building holds an atrium that is flooded with natural light. The main atrium was designed as a flexible space where it can be turned into a performance stage, an informal amphitheatre or a social gathering area.

The exposed timber and coloured ceramic show off the sustainability of the building and create a warmth to the space. The velvet curtains found throughout the centre add flair and contrast to the raw materials.

VPC includes a public working hub, health and welfare centres, bookshop, theatrette, roof terrace and a gallery. As well, a series of individual shopfronts with timber framework, hanging rails and track lighting designed all differently to create individuality to each of the spaces allowing shop owners to create authentic spaces for their shops.
