SECTION OF MELBOURNE'S NEW CYCLING SUPER-HIGHWAY NOW OPEN!

15 Apr 2025

The first part of Melbourne's new cycling 'super-highway' has opened in Docklands, with the 220-metre veloway suspended above Footscray Road. The cycle bridge connects Melbourne's inner west to the CBD as part of the West Gate Tunnel Project, making it easier for pedestrians and cyclists to traverse between the two.

The neon-green elevated crossing provides a safer alternative for pedestrians and cyclists navigating the busy Footscray Road and Waterfront Way intersection. Suspended from two 40-metre tall steel pylons, the bridge draws design inspiration from the iconic West Gate Bridge.

The bridge represents another step toward transforming the Footscray Road corridor into Australia’s premiere cycling super-highway. It forms a critical link to the upcoming 2.5-kilometre veloway scheduled to open later in 2025. The bridge’s distinctive green colour and cable-stayed design make it an instant landmark in the Docklands precinct, while its practical purpose addresses long-standing safety concerns for non-motorised commuters traveling between the city and inner western suburbs.

“This new bridge over Footscray Road is a game-changer – a big step towards transforming the corridor into an elevated cycling super-highway between the city and the west,” Minister for Transport Infrastructure Gabrielle Williams said.

The West Gate Tunnel Project will deliver over 14km of new and upgraded walking and cycling paths, making travel easier and safer. The project was designed in respone to community feedback wanting more travel choices and better access to existing paths, creating new connections and providing a revitalised urban environment.

Key benefits include:

  • a completed Federation Trail and missing links in the Kororoit Creek Trail
  • a new 2.5km elevated veloway which will give cyclists a safe and express route to and from the city
  • better links to popular trails across Greater Melbourne
  • connecting Spotswood and Yarraville with a new pedestrian and cycling path from Hyde Street Reserve to Spotswood Station
  • a new connection along Hyde Street and Harris Street in Yarraville which will redirect cyclists from the dangerous intersection of Somerville Road and Whitehall Street
  • a new cycling and pedestrian bridge connecting Yarraville Gardens and the Maribyrnong River
  • connecting communities with new paths across the West Gate Freeway improving safety and access
  • new, safer cycling and pedestrian bridge across Moonee Ponds Creek at Dynon Road
  • a new bridge crossing over Footscray Road at Moonee Ponds Creek Trail, avoiding the busy signalised intersection.

The complete cycle super-highway is anticipated to be complete in late 2025.
