OAKS FOR THE FUTURE

18 Oct 2023

Established for more than 45 years, Mt William Advanced Tree Nursery are specialists in quality advanced trees. Growing approximately 50/50 of both native and exotics as the demand for a balance of both becomes more common.

Recognising the value an old Oak Tree, for shade, longevity, drought tolerance and fire retardant, Mt William Advanced Tree Nursery annually collect from a wide range of species to propagate, helping with biodiversity for the future.

Once the acorns germinate, the daily checking and immediate potting into loose, moist, and nutrient-rich soil occurs, trying to mimic the nature conditions found under a mature tree.

From the generous spread of the drought hardy Quercus canariensis (Algerian Oak) to the interesting evergreen Quercus suber (Cork Oak), Mt William Advanced Tree Nursery are currently growing the following species:

  • Quercus accutissima
Native to China, Asia and the Himalayas this is a large, long-lived but slow-growing tree with dense foliage.
  • Quercus bicolour (Swamp Oak)
Two tones/colours on the upper and lower on the surface of the leaves, very rare.
  • Quercus canariensis (Algerian Oak)
Excellent drought tolerance and shade tree.
  • Quercus castaneifolia (Chestnut leaved Oak)
    Fast growing conical shaped tree.
  • Quercus cerris (Turkey Oak)
Long lived, tough tree with great Autumn colour.
  • Quercus coccinea (Scarlet Oak)
    Fast growing, stunning Autumn colour.
  • Quercus ilex (Holly Oak)
    Large evergreen Oak.
  • Quercus palustris (Pin Oak)
A favourite for shape and colour.
  • Quercus palustris EDF
Early defoliant form of Pin Oak.
  • Quercus palustris ‘Pringreen Green Pillar’
    Columnar form great for driveways.
  • Quercus robur (English Oak)
