Arthur Phillip High, NSW’s first highrise public school, opened its doors in 2020, starting a new school year with a range of A-grade infrastructure products from Astra Street Furniture.
Arthur Phillip High School is the first of several highrise public schools located in NSW. The brand-new building provides the high school with flexible, technology-rich learning spaces and assigned homebase levels for each year from 7 through 12.
The features of the new learning spaces include movable and adaptable furniture to allow for greater room configurations, providing better learning opportunities in collaborative and individual learning. Increased facilities for elective and specialised subjects such as science, metal and woodwork, 3D design, food technology, performance, music and art, along with an extra-large multisport gymnasium.
The state-of-the-art building and learning spaces contribute to efforts aimed at enriching the learning opportunities provided to present and future students of Arthur Phillip High School.
To outfit Arthur Phillip High School with functional infrastructure products, the principal and the business manager had an establishment grant to use for items such as bins, mats and sports equipment. Their requirements for a supplier included a renowned Australian manufacturer that could be trusted to deliver the products in time for installation, well before the grand opening of Term 1 in 2020. They also needed a company with high-quality, durable products at competitive prices, to justify the investment.
The bonus for the school’s specifiers was being able to order all the items needed from the same supplier – Astra Street Furniture.
The school’s design includes a central core containing all general learning spaces, student services, library, laboratories and TAS workshops. This central core is interconnected by many large lifts, and every level is encircled by an uninterrupted balcony with stairs between levels, all enclosed by steel mesh to facilitate natural light and breezes, and to prevent falls.
The Arthur Phillip stakeholders were after products that would positively contribute to the aesthetics already set by the school’s building design and layout. The functionality of the products was also a key factor in the selection of and allocation to communal areas of those items throughout the school. Products being considered for purchase had to facilitate the individuals using those facilities to keep their environment clean in a hygienic manner.
These common spaces in the school, and the greenspace outside the ground-floor gymnasium, are where the Athens wheelie bin enclosures purchased from Astra Street Furniture were placed, to facilitate rubbish and recycling separation on all levels of the central core. Custom logo entrance mats, bike racks, bollards and stainless steel tactiles are among the other items supplied by Astra.
Astra Street Furniture is a member of the Area Safe Group and is the new flagship brand of its premium outdoor furniture range, which includes seats, benches, tables, picnic-settings, bins, wheelie-bin enclosures, bike racks and bollards.
Astra Street Furniture is proud to be Australian designed and produced. Being locally manufactured means product features can be customised quickly to suit any design and colour palette, using standard components and Australian powdercoat colours such as Dulux and Colourbond.
