Adelaide’s iconic Rundle Mall has been transformed with the addition of a catenary lighting system that delivers a unique and welcoming ambience, optismising the space for public use at night.
Increased urban density drives a need for better utilisation of public spaces – our havens of community respite, relaxation and social interaction. With little new space available, one opportunity resides in the optimisation of existing outdoor spaces, enhancing their quality and extending their usage into their evening hours with catenary lighting.
At Adelaide’s Rundle Mall, Australia’s oldest pedestrian shopping mall, a recent renovation resulted in a spacious and welcoming environment, creating a captivating and connected place and repositioning the Mall as the premier retail district in Adelaide.
The suspended catenary lighting system from Ronstan Tensile Architecture, with its tensioned network of cables, connects at just 24 locations through the 11, 800sqm mall, allowing the creation of an unparalleled open space free of clutter and intrusive poles. But it’s the flexibility of catenary lighting that allows lighting designers to play with mood (and Ronstan’s desire to engage with spaces) to increase night time use with improved atmosphere.
Catenary Lighting is based on “less is more”. The cables allow light to be focussed in areas that need it, leaving other places in darkness and building character, something conventional lighting struggles to achieve. In this way people can be guided to safer areas, with light spill reduced to minimise light pollution and energy consumption.
