CLEM JONES CENTRE UPGRADES TO SUSTAINABLE AND ACCESSIBLE ARTIFICIAL TURF
31 Oct 2025
As part of ongoing improvements to its popular sports and recreation facility in Brisbane, the not-for-profit Clem Jones Centre recently partnered with Ecovia Turf to deliver a more sustainable and functional landscape solution for its visitors.
Ecovia Turf’s fully permeable backing works seamlessly with new channel drains to maximise surface drainage and prevent waterlogging.
Covering two main entrance areas totalling 300m², the centre sought to replace its ageing synthetic turf, which had become difficult to maintain due to poor drainage and non-recyclable materials. Ecovia Turf was engaged to remove the existing surface, re-level the base, and provide a durable, fully recyclable alternative designed to cope with high pedestrian traffic.
Newly installed EcoAbode 30 mm turf provides a clean, low-maintenance welcome zone at the Clem Jones Centre’s main entrance.
The EcoAbode 30mm turf was selected for its ideal balance of comfort and practicality. With a low, even pile height, it offers smooth movement for wheelchairs, prams, and elderly users without excessive friction, making it perfectly suited to the centre’s community focus.
Thoughtful pathway design ensures easy navigation for families, children and elderly visitors while increasing usable green space.
During installation, the Ecovia team identified contamination and poor compaction within the existing sub-base, which had been contributing to long-term drainage problems. The crew replaced this with new, free draining crusher dust, re-compacted the surface, and installed 40 linear metres of channel drain plus additional drainage points to improve water flow across both the turf and surrounding pathways.
The EcoAbode system delivers a durable and accessible surface ideal for high-traffic community facilities.
Sustainability was a major driver for the upgrade. Unlike conventional latex-backed turf, Ecovia Turf's mono-material design is latex free, 100 percent recyclable and features a fully permeable backing, allowing rainwater to drain quickly through the entire surface rather than through limited perforations. All site waste from the project was recycled locally, aligning with the Brisbane City Council’s circular economy goals.
EcoAbode 30 mm turf enhances the centre’s outdoor areas, offering a natural look with superior drainage and recyclability.
In collaboration with the centre’s management, Ecovia also helped redesign pathway connections, creating separate walking routes for elderly visitors and families while opening up new, usable green zones. The result is a more inclusive and low-maintenance environment that enhances the centre’s community appeal while reducing ongoing upkeep costs.
Ecovia Turf’s mono-material backing is 100 percent recyclable and latex-free, allowing water to drain freely through the entire surface.
Completed in just five days, the project was delivered on time and within budget. The Clem Jones Centre has since received enthusiastic feedback on the turf’s natural appearance, durability, and the improved accessibility it brings to one of Brisbane’s busiest community facilities.
