AUTUMN RED LEUCADENDRONS

18 Mar 2015

Autumn is the optimum time to enjoy the spectacular flowers and foliage of red Leucadendrons.

Autumn is the optimum time to enjoy the spectacular flowers and foliage of red Leucadendrons, which add colour and vibrancy to landscapes during the cooler months.

Leucadendron is a genus of plant from the Proteaceae family, and is well-suited to Australian conditions. Available in different sizes, foliage colours, and textures, Leucadendrons can be used for screening, shade or colourful borders, adding something special to any garden or landscaping project.

These are a few of our favourites:
Leucadendron ‘Safari Sunset’
Probably one of the most commonly used Leucadendrons, ‘Safari Sunset’ grows 2.5m high x 1.5m wide. Whether planted en-masse or as a feature, ‘Safari Sunset’ makes itself known in gardens with its deep burgundy colour, while its stunning red foliage is also often used for floral design.

Leucadendron ‘Misty Sunrise’
‘Misty Sunrise’ was released in 2014, this new-comer grows 1.5m high x 1m wide. The foliage on ‘Misty Sunrise’ has been described as grey, blue, purple and burgundy. Autumn and Winter are the optimum time for its burgundy colour, however due to the many colours seen in its foliage it is an attractive and eye-catching plant year round.

Leucadendron ‘Red Gem’
Often mistaken for ‘Safari Sunset,’ it is the subtle differences that make ‘Red Gem’ stand out. They are renowned for the slight, white fluff on the tip of their leaves and they offer lush, bushy foliage, the red is not as deep as burgundy. ‘Red Gem’ grows 2m high x 1.5m wide, and its colour changes to almost yellow with red tips in winter.

Leucadendrons require acidic, well-drained soil and should be planted in a sunny position; they are hardy garden varieties that require little water and maintenance once established. Leucadendrons require a good pruning once a year before next year’s growth appears, to maintain their shape and size, usually between September and November is a good time to prune.

Ausflora Pacific has a large selection of Leucadendrons; with over 20 varieties, you’re sure to find the perfect plant for your needs. We have been providing Leucadendron plants and cut flowers to retailers, wholesalers and landscapers for 30 years.
