AUSTRALIA'S 2023 EUCALYPT OF THE YEAR

Australia’s favourite eucalypt for 2023 has been chosen on the tenth anniversary of National Eucalypt Day. The Angophora costata: Sydney Red Gum.

Mt William Advanced Tree Nursery has been growing both the Angophora costata and Angophora hispida for many seasons and have quality stock available in 18, 45, 100 and 200lt. Some of the impressive 200lt costata’s were recently featured in several gardens at the Melbourne International Flower Show.

The main point of difference between the two species is the size, with the Angophora hispida being the dwarf version.

Here is a snapshot to compare the two species.

Angophora costata

  • Smooth grey back that sheds to expose pink-orange coloured bark in late winter.
  • Flower buds are distinctive with little pointy ribs, which produce masses of creamy-white flowers from spring to summer.
  • Beautiful new red growth
  • Mature size: 20m x 12m

Angophora hispida

  • Grows naturally as a multi stemmed but with training can be grown as a small single truck tree.
  • Mature size: 7-8m x 5-6m
  • Pink tips on new growth
  • Derived from the Greek word- Hispida means bristly, with its young stems and foliage appearing distinctly hairy!
