Metro West Hits Major Milestone

Construction on the Metro West line has hit a major milestone, with tunnel boring machine (TBM) Betty smashing into cavern deep beneath Westmead to complete the first tunnel at the western end of the 24-kilometre line. This landmark breakthrough brings major tunnelling for the project to 93 percent completion.

Metro West Hits Major Milestone

Once complete, the city-shaping Metro West will link Westmead to the Sydney CBD through Parramatta, Olympic Park and Five Dock in a 22-minute trip. Commuters will be able to move from Westmead to Parramatta in two minutes, reach Pyrmont in 20 minutes and arrive at Hunter St in 22 minutes.

Premier Chris Minns said, "this is an exciting milestone in the delivery of the Sydney Metro West project. With this breakthrough at what will become Westmead station, we are well on the way with this city shaping piece of transport infrastructure."

TBM Betty worked around the clock for 2 years at a progress rate of about 200 metres a week to build the nine-kilometre tunnel from Sydney Olympic Park. During that time, it chewed through 790,000 tonnes of earth and lined the tunnel walls with 30,000 concrete segments along the way.

A crew of up to 150 workers at a time have spent three years building the 500-metre underground cavern at Westmead. It is the deepest station on the Metro West line, at up to 39 metres below ground.

The remaining sections of tunnel are being worked on by three TBMs:  TBM Dorothy is 1,059 metres from its final breakthrough at Westmead, where it is due to arrive in the coming weeks. At the opposite end of the alignment, TBMs Ruby and Jessie are making their way under Sydney Harbour to reach the Hunter Street terminus in the Sydney CBD by the end of the year.

“Seeing the first tunnel reach the end of the line, and the project’s furthest point west, is a moment to celebrate as the community here in the heart of western Sydney looks forward to its own Metro line," stated Minister for Transport John Graham.

The line is on track to open in 2032, Premier Minns confirmed, with new stations at Westmead, Parramatta, Sydney Olympic Park, North Strathfield, Burwood North, Five Dock, The Bays, Pyrmont and Hunter St.
