YOUR GUIDE TO THE 2026 LEAD-FREE PLUMBING REQUIREMENT

12 Feb 2026

Australia’s lead-free plumbing requirements come fully into effect on 1 May 2026, introducing new compliance standards for all plumbing products that come into contact with drinking water. From this date, copper alloy products must contain no more than 0.25% lead and be certified under the Lead-Free WaterMark scheme to be legally installed.

The requirement applies to taps, drinking fountains, bottle refill stations, valves and related components used for drinking water. Only products listed on the WaterMark Product Database will be compliant, with the changes now embedded within the National Construction Code and overseen by the Australian Building Codes Board.

The three-year transition period, running from May 2023 to May 2026, was introduced to allow manufacturers, suppliers and asset managers time to update specifications, sell through older stock and prepare for the shift. While non-lead free products can still be installed during the transition, only certified lead free products will be permitted after the deadline.

For schools, councils, workplaces and public facilities, early planning is essential. Auditing existing assets, updating specifications and selecting certified lead free products now helps avoid delays, failed inspections and unexpected costs as the deadline approaches. Proactive upgrades support safer drinking water outcomes and ensure long-term compliance with Australia’s evolving plumbing standards.
