WATERLOO SOUTH RENEWAL PROJECT TAKES NEXT STEP

23 Apr 2025

The NSW Government has taken the next step in delivering the Waterloo South Renewal Project by signing the contracts and formalising the partnership to develop the first stage of the renewal project, which will include social housing and dedicated green spaces.

The NSW Government has taken the next step in delivering the Waterloo South Renewal Project by signing the contracts and formalising the partnership with Stockland, Link Wentworth Housing, City West Housing and Birribee Housing to develop the first stage of the renewal project.

The Waterloo Renewal Project will deliver essential social housing infrastructure and deliver housing supply in a vibrant place to live, work and visit that is close to jobs and transport.

The project will enhance the strength and diversity of Waterloo, a unique urban village on Gadigal Land. It will be one of Australia’s largest and most significant inner-city renewal initiatives and is expected to be delivered over multiple stages.

“Committed to delivering thriving communities, Waterloo South will be designed with exceptional amenity and dedicated green space, including a 2ha urban park—the largest delivered in the city in recent times,” the Government said.

The renewal will deliver new homes, community places, and green spaces which prioritise the health and wellbeing of social housing tenants and more sustainable mixed communities. Buildings and outdoor spaces will be designed to minimise energy, water, waste and urban heat effects, achieving minimum 6-star Green Star communities rating accreditation for the precinct.

The community will include more open space, better facilities and shops that suit their needs – all important elements of a vibrant community.

The project objectives are:

  • More and better social housing deliver more and better social housing in mixed communities to meet the needs of tenants now and in the future.
  • Positive outcomes for tenants create a place that supports tenants’ health and wellbeing and sensitively manages change over time.
  • Outcomes for Aboriginal people prioritise outcomes for the Redfern/Waterloo Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community through planning, delivery, and operations.
  • An authentic sense of place building on Waterloo’s past and current strengths to create an authentic, distinctive, and welcoming place.
  • Environmental sustainability support a community that is resilient to climate change and carbon positive.
  • Strong collaboration collaborate with the community, not-for-profit and private sectors to deliver social and housing outcomes.

The renewal of the estate will be staged over the next 30 years to enable a coordinated approach that minimises disruption for existing tenants.
