The 75,000-sqm redevelopment of the Wharf, located at the heart of Darling Harbour, is progressing to the next stage of the approvals process with the Stage Two Development Application and Environmental Impact Statement going on display.
The $891-million project Stage One concept plan was approved by The NSW Independent Planning Commission in May 2019. Since that approval was granted, the surrounding Darling Harbour precinct has evolved, including the 2023 completion of the troubled Ribbon/IMAX project, and placemaking at Tumbalong Park.

“Delivering more than 6,500-sqm of additional open public space, with new green space created over the top of the eight-lane Western Distributor, the redevelopment will enhance connectivity between Darling Harbour and the CBD community. It will also have connectivity to key public transport hubs, including Town Hall Station and future Metro stations."
The latest approval under the State Significant Development pathway gives consent for an expanded podium envelope to incorporate improved pedestrian connections including lifts, elevators and a new pedestrian bridge to Market Street. Public open space has been set at 15,089-sqm, including the 5500-sqm park on the podium roof above the Western Distributor, and 511 new trees will provide canopy cover of 30.6 percent.

Construction in six stages will require about three years, with approval clearing the way for the demolition of structures on Cockle Bay Wharf and other early works.
