VOICE OF URBAN NATURE PAVILION

20 Feb 2023

Showcased at the Floriade Expo in Amsterdam, the Voice of Urban Nature was unveiled. Built from 100 percent locally sourced or biobased building materials from the Amsterdam and Almere region, the pavilion aids to promote a healthier planet and educate the audience on how to coexist with nature.

Architecture firm, Overtreders W constructed the design with wooden modules filled with hemp lime. The timber was sourced from regional forests and painted from flam oil to create the black finish. The pavilion is lined with greenery from climbing the walls to garden beds, the green islands are framed by the wooden structure. An isolated roof garden is accessible only to birds and insects, allowing the fauna a sweet treat from the nectar-producing plant life. Featuring edible crops, native fungi and various other species, the green life within the pavilion is abundant and diverse.

In addition to the green life and nature-based building materials, the black painted timber was the perfect canvas for colourful and quirky drawings from Paul Faassen. Seen throughout the pavilion, the whimsical designs add a pop of colour to the pavilion space and complement the greenery.

With opportunities for education, QR codes are placed throughout the pavilion allowing viewers to learn about native species to the local region and inspiring people.

The pavilion is an ode to how life can be enriched by embracing the natural world and is a fun platform to educate an audience on how people and nature can harmoniously coexist.
