VERTICAL WATER AND GREENERY
03 Dec 2014
A radical interpretation of the traditional shopping mall has been unveiled for China.
A revolutionary new design for a shopping centre in China’s Zhengzhou district has just been unveiled.
Featuring a rich rooftop garden as well as abundant vertical and horizontal gardens scattered throughout, the Hanhai Dongfeng Town Centre will also feature a canal weaving through the shopping centre, an elevated fountain plaza, a dedicated aquarium, and an iconic LED screen doubling as a canopy stretching from one corner of the roof to another.
Designed by amphibianArc, the new shopping centre has set the bar high for contemporary urban architecture in the area.
Patrons of the centre will be able to embark on gondola rides along the canals, which offer a pedestrian view sincerely unique to Dongfeng, take a glass elevator ride through the aquarium, or sit in an open plan seating area in view of the fountain plaza.
Expected to fast become a popular local and international destination embracing a cultural and geographic diversity, the centre will be a place for popular social activities as well as provide an environment that is at once intimate and immersive for the clientele.
In addition to being a social hub, Dongfeng will also be popular with families, with themed restaurants and retail outlets thoughtfully chosen to align with the aesthetics. There will also be a Family Entertainment Centre (FEC) included.
Zhengzhou, the greater region surrounding Dongfeng, is one of the top 10 cities in China most severely affected by pollution. By incorporating green landscapes where possible, the Hanhai Donfeng Town Centre will not only be visually appealing, but will also demonstrate the importance and ability to reverse air pollution.
