URBAN REVITALISATION WINS PREMIER'S PRIZE

07 Jul 2022

The urban renewal of Newcastle City into a thriving mixed-use public space has won the Premier’s Prize at this year’s NSW Architecture Awards.

A trio of architecture firms, SJB, Durbach Block Jaggers and Tonkin Zulaikha Greer, were awarded the prestigious prize for their design of Newcastle East End Stage 1, which has revitalised the centre of the regional city.

“This urban renewal project, in Hunter Street Newcastle, is key to the transformation of Newcastle City,” the jury said. “The project skilfully addresses the key policy priorities of delivering well-connected communities with quality local environments.”

The Premier’s Prize was among 70 awards and commendations revealed at the NSW Architecture Awards, where built environment professionals celebrated the year’s top projects and recognise industry leaders.

Two projects were awarded The Lord Mayor’s Prize. SJB’s 52 Reservoir Street was acknowledged as “an excellent example of how architecture and artistry adds richness to the public domain”.

The infill building uses sculptural elements to add light and interest, and also added a laneway to optimise the use of public space.

“This project shows how small works can improve the quality of the public domain in different ways through design excellence,” the citation said.

Likewise, the impact on public space created by SJB, Silvester Fuller, Studio Bright, Carter Williamson, Lippmann Partnership and ASPECT Studios in the heritage renewal of the Quay Quarter Lanes project saw it awarded the Lord Mayor’s Prize.
