WHAT IS TOP DRESSING?

Top dressing is the practice of applying a thin layer (usually around 7-10mm) of a mineral and/or organic material to Benedict’s treasured amenity turf surfaces and is considered an integral part of turf management when it comes to keeping turf surfaces in best condition. The top dressing process helps to create a safe, level playing surface by filling in hollows or divots and evening out undulating surfaces, and can also assist with nutrient retention, drainage and resistance to disease and pests through controlling an excessive build-up of thatch.

WHEN TO TOP DRESS?

In Sydney the best time for top dressing is in the warmer months early in the growing season, from September through to February/ March.

BENEDICT'S TOP DRESSING PRODUCTS

Benedict has a complete range of quality-assured and agronomically-designed top dress mixes, for reassurance that a projects turf surfaces will be strong, healthy and ready for play this summer.

Controlled tipping of top dressing materials on site

Benedict’s customers have varying needs depending on goals, turf type, existing turf profile and/or the drainage system that may be in place.  Some of the company’s customers prefer using straight sands especially where they have existing sand slit drainage in place. Whilst others prefer an 80/20 type of material, or to lean towards heavier blends that may have the addition of organic materials added (often used where a sandy profile exists and where the customer is seeking to add increased water and nutrient holding potential).

Benedict have developed TURFLOAM, a quality assured washed 80/20, that utilises up to 80 percent reclaimed sands from the construction industry.  It is easy to spread, gives optimal coverage and is produced by washing the blend through a 2mm screen.  TURFLOAM is 100 percent safe for areas where children and animals will frequent, and recommended for use in the below top dressing applications:

  • Premium Sportsfields
  • Municipal Ovals
  • All Amenity Areas
  • School Ovals and Play Areas

TURFLOAM has a high Hydraulic Conductivity whilst also offering an appropriate clay/silt fraction (to increase water holding capacity whilst also improving drainage), and is quality assured both externally through SESL (Sydney Environmental & Soil Laboratory Australia) and internally by the company’s onsite laboratory at Benedict Sands - Menangle.

Looking for an environmentally friendly, sustainable alternative to a quarried 80/20? TURFLOAM or one of its organically amended variants such as TURFLOAMC20 or TURFLOAMC5 is the answer.  Benedict has stringent quality controls in place over the reclaimed sand that the company receive and utilise for the production of Turfloam to assure the end product is not only fit for purpose but also a leading product in its class.
