Tokyo Toilet is an all-ages and -abilities public restroom designed as a ‘vessel open for everyone’ recounts the design team on the project. Inspired by the idea of a public fountain, as a place for people to connect and attract visitors. Suo Fujimoto explains the restroom is ‘a new way of public space where people gather around water’.

Juxtaposing the skyscrapers surrounding, the organic shaped structure complements the additional soft landscaping. The pops of green against the white painted structure creates a peaceful mood for users to feel welcomed and relaxed. As well, Suo Fujimoto explains the choice of white paint for the structure, ‘The intention of making it white expresses cleanliness; if it gets dirty, you must clean it. The fact that the white colour is maintained indicates that maintenance has been carried out.’

The absence of high walls and a roof allow the restroom to feel more open and spacious to the public. The curvaceous structure’s street facing wall bends low to the ground with a series of washbasins along this low curved wall. The washbasins are accessible from both inside and outside the structure hoping to engage users and passerbyers to use the hygiene and drinking station available.
