The plans for the museum complex, called Liget Budapest, were proposed in 2014. Sou Fujimoto was among the architects chosen to design the new music venue. Conceived as a community space for the city, the building will host concerts and exhibitions as well as educational classes and workshops. Now, three and half years after the scheme was first selected, construction is finally set to get underway.
Sou Fujimoto’s design for the project features an undulating and perforated roof, where individual voids bring light into gallery spaces below. The greenery of the adjacent parkland is continued beneath the shelter of the canopy, allowing visitors to establish a close connection with the surrounding natural environment. The House of Hungarian Music will serve as a permanent representation of musical history, with a wide range of exhibitions and performances.
The House of Hungarian Music will eventually be joined by other significant buildings as part of the same development. Designed by Sanaa, the new national gallery will exhibit artworks from the 19th century to the present day, while the city’s popular transport museum, will be fundamentally renewed by Mérték Architectural Studio.
