SUNSET PARKLET
28 Jul 2015
San Francisco architectural firm Interstice Architects have developed the ‘sunset parklet’ - a flexible, outdoor furniture installation situated in San Francisco’s outer sunset district.
Interstice Architects’ sunset parklet is unique from the other parklets within the city. The sculptural form derives from the topography of San Francisco - mainly its famous uphill and downhill streets.
Measuring 50 feet (15.24m), the timber strips form 4 ‘streets’ which undulate to become a bike parking platform, lounge chairs, tables, planters and accessible areas of ground.
Receiving special recognition in the urban design award, the public amenity encourages social gathering, and its adaptability engages people from diverse constituencies.
The parklet is constructed using sustainable and reclaimed materials, offering a warm complex wood environment as a refuge from the concrete sidewalk, and serves as a community gathering space.
From some angles it is even said to resemble a large barge, or freighter carrying its passengers to the nearby beach.
