With the help of the creative minds at Angelo Candalepas and Associates, this winning design is set to be the largest gallery in Australia. The 30,000 square metre landmark will stand strong in the heart of Melbourne CBD with 13,000 square metres of display space. NGV Contemporary will include an array of additional features such as a rooftop terrace, sculpture garden, studio and lab spaces as well as educational areas.

The triangular-shaped structure will be home to many domestic and international artworks including many of the world’s favourites such as Picasso and the intricate textile works of Chanel. The central spherical hall and stairway will be the focal point of the gallery. Given the name Omphalos, after the Greek word meaning "centre of the earth", the lantern-like roofing alongside the light-soaked hallways and central spherical hall will be a must-see architectural masterpiece and tough competition to the famous New York gallery, the Guggenheim.
