REVITALISING HISTORY

17 Mar 2026

Completed in early 2025, the transformation of the heritage-listed Lord Stanley Hotel in East Brisbane marks a remarkable balance between preservation and modern reimagining. Originally established in 1889, the hotel has long been a local landmark. Its recent renovation, led by MCD Construction following the design by BSPN Architects, set out to honour the building’s rich past while creating a vibrant contemporary venue fit for today’s patrons.

The design brief centred on preserving the character and charm of the historic structure. Rather than masking the building’s age, the project emphasised authentic, rustic elements. Exposed brickwork and timber textures play a central role in maintaining the hotel’s original aesthetic. At the same time, carefully integrated contemporary materials and detailing elevate the overall experience, bridging more than a century of architectural evolution.

A key part of this vision included the addition of a rooftop bar, an entirely new feature that brings fresh functionality to the venue. This elevated space not only expands the hotel’s hospitality offering but creates a unique indoor–outdoor environment with expansive views and a welcoming atmosphere.

FUTUREWOOD'S CONTRIBUTION TO A MODERN CLASSIC

Futurewood products were selected for their ability to complement both the historic character and modern requirements of the renovation. The use of EnviroSlat 60mm x 40mm and 40mm x 30mm screening battens in the rich Black Bean colour provided designers with versatile options for internal and external applications. These battens were used extensively to enhance internal walls, screens, and the hotel’s entrance, delivering a cohesive aesthetic that is warm, refined, and true to the venue’s heritage personality. Best of all it is a low maintenance product, meaning that the pub will not be up for substantial annual maintenance bills to handle the sanding, painting and oiling of other timber products.

The project also incorporated CleverDeck 138mm x 23mm Eco-Pro Composite Timber decking in Black Bean. This material was chosen for the rooftop bar and the hotel’s inside/outside dining areas — spaces that demand durability, visual appeal, and longevity. Futurewood’s composite timber offers the look and feel of natural timber while requiring minimal maintenance, ensuring the hotel remains inviting and functional for years to come.

Throughout the renovation, Futurewood worked closely with MCD Construction to ensure that the selected materials were produced in a way to minimise wastage and delivered on time. This collaborative approach helped deliver a finished project that respects the hotel’s storied past while confidently embracing contemporary design.

The renewed Lord Stanley Hotel now stands as a compelling example of how modern materials and thoughtful design can breathe new life into historic spaces — ensuring their relevance and appeal for future generations.
