Works are underway to deliver the new sports field, playgrounds, picnic shelters and amphitheatre of the Moore Park South sprawling greenspace.

Phase 2 Works Begin on Moore Park South

Moore Park South is moving into its next stage with temporary fencing to be installed this week, ahead of construction and earthworks starting to deliver major elements of the Minns Labor Government’s vision for the parkland.

The first stage of works focused on enabling safe public access to the new park, alongside an active golf precinct. These early access works included the installation of temporary fencing between the golf precinct and parkland, removal of sections of the perimeter fence, and establishment of new access points via South Dowling Street, Dacey Avenue, and the Reshs Bridge link to Redfern. This first section of Moore Park South is now welcoming visitors, with expansive green lawns, picnic tables and an off-leash dog area officially open.

With Phase Two beginning early November, works will primarily take place on the western side of Moore Park South, close to South Dowling Street, and will include:

  • community sports field
  • community lawns
  • natural amphitheatre
  • play spaces
  • picnic shelters
  • new plantings and landscaping.

These works are expected to be completed by mid-2027, providing more opportunities for local residents and visitors to play sport, exercise, socialise and enjoy the outdoors.

The park has been carefully designed to work with the existing landscape and retain as many mature trees as possible, says the media communique. While some trees will be removed the overall tree canopy will increase and all trees will be replaced using suitable native species to achieve a successful landscape outcome for the park, including mature plantings.

“Moore Park South has already opened up new opportunities for people and their furry friends to enjoy public green space, on the doorstep of one of Australia’s most densely populated areas. This next stage will add to that, delivering a new sports field, playgrounds, picnic shelters and great gathering spaces for families, sporting groups and local residents to enjoy,” said Minister for Planning and Public Spaces Paul Scully.

Design and planning is also underway for multi-purpose sports courts, nature playground, amenities and additional parkland improvements. These works are expected to commence from mid-2027, with the full transformation of Moore Park South expected to be completed in 2028. Key features of the final establishment plan include:

  • a revitalised golf offer featuring a 12-hole public golf course, designed in collaboration with a respected golf architect, expanded driving range with up to 90 bays, 18-hole mini golf course, plus putting and chipping greens
  • a mix of active and passive recreation opportunities with a community sports field, multi-purpose sports courts, outdoor fitness equipment and natural open areas
  • picnic spaces with barbecues
  • nature playground in a centrally located area
  • designated on- and off-leash areas for dogs
  • a connected pedestrian path network which will improve access to key destinations within the park, linking it to surrounding neighbourhoods, including Moore Park East, the Entertainment Quarter and Centennial Park
  • a park design that works with the existing landscape to enhance and support biodiversity and habitat creation, through the planting of native grasses, shrubs and trees.

Other areas of the park will remain open for the duration of these works. This next phase of work is expected to be completed by mid-2027. An interim 12-hole golf course is also currently available.
