PERTH CONCERT HALL RENOVATION RAMPS UP

10 Oct 2024

Four years after it was supposed to be completed, the renovation on the Perth Concert Hall has started up again with artist impressions released of the revamped 51-year-old heritage-listed facility, with works slated to begin next year.

The $150-million redevelopment of the Perth Concert Hall, bordered by St Georges Terrace to the north and Government House to the west, is slated to start in early 2025, once the venue closes at the end of thus year, the WA Government said. Architecture firms WITH Architecture Studio and Office for Metropolitan Architecture have been working since 2022 on the new design.

The investment will restore the much-loved heritage building’s architectural integrity, preserve its renowned acoustics, distinctive features and enhance the surrounding courtyards. The improved facilities will allow for broader community engagement and equitable access.

The redevelopment includes:
  • preservation of the PCH’s world-renowned acoustic features
  • essential structural maintenance of the award-winning building architecture
  • updated seating, new rehearsal spaces and improved backstage facilities
  • improved venue accessibility, with remodelling of the auditorium entry, lifts, stairs, additional toilets and box office relocation
  • refurbishment of the foyer areas, upgraded signage and lighting
  • new food and beverage offerings
  • transformed northern and southern forecourts
  • new spaces for small events, school educational visits and training.

“The works are vital to safeguard the future of the iconic Perth Concert Hall building for artistic groups, performers and audiences,” WA Culture and Arts Minister David Templeman said.

When complete, the concert hall will be home to the West Australian Symphony Orchestra, and is expected to host more than 160 events a year.
