Copenhagen Islands is a not-for-profit project initiated by Australian architect Marshall Blecher and Danish design studio Fokstrot that aims to engage the city’s water lovers.

The first island prototype was introduced to the harbour in 2018, which become extremely popular, with a range of activities being help including photography exhibitions, talks, and picnics.

Three more new islands are planned to be launched in 2020, with plans for more to be included in the future.

Described as a “parkipelago”, the islands will create a playful floating greenspace with “endemic plants, trees and grasses above and anchor points below providing a habitat for birds and insects, seaweeds, fish and molluscs”.  The consistently adapting project will be hand-build using traditional wooden boat building techniques.

The modular islands can be transported seasonally through the popular and underutilised areas of the harbour in order to “catalyse life and activity”. The space will “hint at a new type of climate-resilient urbanism, inherently flexible in its use and only using sustainably sourced and recycled materials”.

The project has received numerous awards including the Taipei International Design Awards for Public Space and Social Design, the Beazley Design Prize at the London Design Museum and is a finalist in the Danish Design Prize.
