Olympicopolis; A Place Fit for the Gods

A new design for London's $1.1 billion project, Olympicopolis, has just been revealed. The project will revitalise the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park and create an innovative public space precinct of “culture, innovation and growth”.

The mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, revealed new images for the project, including additional developments as part of the scheme for the London College of fashion and BBC’s new HQ for the Symphony Orchestra & Chorus. The project will include a selection of landmark complexes, including the V&A East and a cultural and education quarter. The development will see the construction of 600 new residential homes.

“Great cities are defined by their ambition as much as their achievements – East Bank is the most ambitious new project of its kind for decades,” stated Khan. “I have made culture, innovation, and growth a top priority, and as London’s centre of gravity extends east, I’m delighted that we’re placing culture and education at the heart of this development and the Olympic legacy.”

Olympicopolis will feature across three sites: UCL East, which will hold a new campus for the University College London; Stratford Waterfront, which will hold the BBC music quarters; and Here East that will hold the V&A East scheme and an existing space for UCL. The Stratford Waterfront will also contain the Sadler’s Wells scheme, the London College of Fashion, and the V&A partnership.

“My vision for East Bank is one where everyone, regardless of their background, can access world-class culture and education on their doorstep,” Khan explained in a statement. “East Bank is a fantastic collaboration of inter-disciplinary work and world-class institutions that will drive forward growth and inspire more young Londoners to take up creative careers, transforming the communities of east London.”
