NEW SPORT PLAN FOR THE TOP END
26 Apr 2016
A new Sport and Active Recreation Master Plan is under consideration by the Northern Territory Government that is based on extensive consultation undertaken by Otium Planning.
The Northern Territory Government will consider a new Sport and Active Recreation Master Plan that is based on extensive consultation undertaken across the Territory.
The draft version of the Northern Territory Sport and Active Recreation Master Plan was released for public comment in March and submissions have now closed. The final draft of the plan will go to the Northern Territory (NT) Government for consideration soon.
The draft report is the result of one of the most comprehensive engagement exercises ever undertaken for a state/territory wide sport and active recreation study. The NT Government engaged Strategic Leisure group (now Otium Planning Group) to prepare the Master Plan. Otium Planning undertook direct discussions with sporting groups, National Sports organisations, Local Governments and other sport and active recreation stakeholders in the Territory. In addition they undertook an audit of territory wide facilities and an analysis of emerging issues in sport and active recreation.
To ensure that this plan was built upon community views, the NT Government also engaged PWC Indigenous Consulting to work in partnership with Otium and manage an extensive general community consultation program. This exhaustive program included online media, surveys, web pages, pop-up stalls, focus groups, community meetings and more.
The Draft Master Plan was released in March for community review and was presented at a series of community briefings. The plan focuses on six strategic directions:
1. Increase the sustainability of sport and active recreation organisations and the viability of their programs.
2. Respond to changing patterns of participation and increasing involvement in active recreation.
3. Improve facility planning and provision.
4. Support regional and remote communities.
5. Invest in urban growth areas.
6. Encourage whole-of-government program integration.
The Plan is intended to provide a blueprint for NT Government planning and delivery in this important area as the population grows and changes over the next 10 years.
