MASSIVE MOUNTAIN BIKE TRAIL OPENS IN MELBOURNE
21 Aug 2025
The first 30km of the Warburton Bike Path has opened, with a further 70km still to come! The mountain bike track delivers fresh trails for diverse riding preferences and skill levels in the Yarra State Forest. Terrain varies throughout the trail network, accommodating different riding styles across the forest environment.
These trails will range across the hills of Mount Little Joe, Mount Tugwel, Mt Bride and Mt Donna Buang, connecting with the popular Lilydale-Warburton Rail Trail and the O’Shannassy Aqueduct Trail.
Senior Project Manager with the Yarra Ranges Council, Matt Harrington, explains what to expect of the first stage of trails,“of the first 30km, about 22km of that is green trail. There is one black trail and one blue trail from the summit of Mount Little Joe — which are awesome by the way. Especially the black trail, it’s a cracker, but we want to set expectations.” he continues.
Harrington says that by the end of this year, they will have north of 80km of singletrack ready for riders, with more still to come.
Mountain biking enthusiasts will find challenges suited to their abilities. Beginners can build confidence on gentler sections. Advanced riders can tackle more technical terrain. The forest setting provides natural beauty alongside adrenaline-pumping descents.
Stage 1 will deliver approximately 100km of mountain bike trail within six sub-stages. Trails will open after each sub-stage is complete over the two-year construction period.
Stage 2 of a further 60km is currently un-funded.
