MAKING CYCLING SAFE IN SYDNEY

25 Nov 2015

When the City of Sydney was looking for long-life, quality products for the 200km upgrade of the city’s street and bike path network, they turned to Durham Drainage Products.

The City of Sydney is in the process of building a 200km network infrastructure, including pedestrian pathways and 55km of dedicated cycleways. Having already created 10km of separated cycleways, 60km of shared paths and 40km of other infrastructure, 110km of the 200km City network is already complete. These upgrades have doubled and in some places tripled the number of bike trips, proving that the new cycleways are a hit with Sydneysiders.

Identifying the need to upgrade their existing streetscape, along with extending the infrastructure, Sydney Council was in need of the right products and the right company to get the job moving. Approaching Durham with their requirements, the company was able to fulfill the contract, and continues to work on the 200km network upgrade.

The City’s newest cycleways on Castlereagh and Liverpool streets are now open, providing for the first time a safe 2.5-kilometre link from Central Station to the Sydney Harbour Bridge, and Durham was a part of making that happen.

A long established company with extensive experience and an excellent reputation in the construction industry, Durham is proud to be a part of the City of Sydney upgrade.

To fulfil the job requirements for the upgrade, Durham designed and installed the paver infill covers used on the footpaths and cycleways, producing a product that sits comfortably with the large pavers used and blending seamlessly with the footpaths.

Durham’s infill covers are robust and designed to eliminate damage when the covers are removed. Their covers are strong enough for heavy vehicular loads, such as emergency, maintenance and garbage vehicles, and provide a long-term solution for a high traffic area while also making it a safe zone for bike riders to traverse.

Durham Drainage Products have been supplying many Council approved contractors for a number of years, and will continue to do so for some time.
