IMPORTANT FACTORS WHEN CHOOSING OUTDOOR SPORTS EQUIPMENT

16 Jan 2012

Outdoor sports equipment is an important consideration for fitness and outdoor enjoyment.

Outdoor sports equipment is an important consideration for fitness and outdoor enjoyment. This is a very broad category of equipment, though there is an increasing focus on outdoor fitness equipment, as opposed to general sports equipment. Today, outdoor sports equipment ranges from playground equipment to cross-trainer machines designed to be used outdoors. Regardless of the type of equipment you’re looking to purchase, though, there are some special considerations that need to be made.

Construction Considerations for Outdoor Sports Equipment

Not all sports equipment is designed to be used outdoors. If you’ll be building an outdoor fitness area or a recreation area, then you need to ensure that the equipment was expressly designed for outdoor use. If not, you’ll find that equipment quickly deteriorates and can even cause injuries. For example, fitness equipment designed for indoor use should never be installed outdoors, as it is not designed to withstand exposure to the elements.
You should ensure that all sports equipment you purchase is designed to be permanently installed and used outdoors. This type of equipment will feature heavier duty construction materials, will have closed systems (pulleys and other items will not be open to the elements), and they will be made of sturdy tubular steel to withstand wind, rain, ice, snow and the devastating effects of sunlight.

Colors and Coatings for Outdoor Sports Equipment

Another important consideration when buying outdoor sports equipment is the color of the equipment. You’ll find that dark colors will absorb heat more readily, so if you’ll be installing this equipment in an area that is not shaded, consider lighter colors (white, beige, cream, etc.). If you’ll be installing it within a shade structure (beneath shade sails, for example), then you have more options when it comes to color, as the sports equipment will not be exposed to direct sunlight and will remain cooler to the touch.

You should also ensure that any sports equipment you purchase for outdoor use is coated properly. It should have a weatherproof coating to ensure that the underlying metal will not rust or oxidize. Paint and UV protective coatings can help ensure that your sports equipment lasts far longer than would otherwise be possible.
Ideally, you’ll shop for your sports equipment from a reputable supplier who is able to cater to your needs. Make sure that the supplier is experienced with projects similar to yours, whether you’re building an outdoor fitness center or installing sports equipment in a municipal park.
