Green Urban Projects was involved in designing and installing the two green walls on the 18th Floor of the Facebook Sydney office.
The Northern wall was over 5m x 1.5m with plants only and the Facebook logo. The southern Wall was 4.5m x 2.5m high and also incorporated three stainless steel water panels.
The walls were constructed and installed in October 2011 and one of the major challenges of the project was the extremely short timeline we had to work with.
The northern wall faces inward towards the black glassed doors, and can be seen from inside the offices. This wall faces more challenges than the southern wall as it has less sunlight to deal with but far greater reflective heat from the glass doors.
Each line of cells has its own irrigated, timed lines of water and these are used in conjunction with a rain monitor. The watering cycle is adjusted according to season and weather.
The southern wall is planted with the majority of herbs (sage, thyme, mint, oregano, parsley) and is interspersed between the water panels. Again, each cell has its own irrigated line and timers.
The stainless steel panels create an amazing light and water effect and care had to be taken to only use water cleansing products that are plant safe.
Other plants used include: Ophiopogon Japonicus Nana; Pteris Albo-lignite; Pyrosia Longifolia; Nephrolepis Blue Bell; Microsorum punctatum; and Pteris mayii.
