DESIGNING PLAY SPACES WITH NATURE'S BLUEPRINT

21 Feb 2024

Austek Play has set a new standard with their innovative concept, showcasing a harmonious blend of custom elements, flexible layouts, and a commitment to preserving the natural environment at Johnston Street Park, Bulimba. Drawing inspiration from the existing space and land contours, this concept design by Austek Play is a testament to the team's dedication to incorporating natural elements into the play environment.

Drawing inspiration from the existing space and land contours, this concept design by Austek Play is a testament to the team's dedication to incorporating natural elements into the play environment. The soft colour palette of greens and browns, along with the natural use of timbers, creates a visual synergy that seamlessly blends with the surrounding landscape.

Austek Play offers a unique playground experience by utilising Omnitech, one of their Australian manufacturers, and their Extreme components. This innovative and modular equipment allows for complete customisation, tailoring layouts to fit the available footprint. The incorporation of activity boxes and extreme units adds a dynamic aspect to the playground, ensuring a diverse range of play options for children.

With construction expected to commence in May this year, one of the standout features of this concept design is its interconnectedness of main structures. The strategic placement of play zones ensures a continuous flow, encouraging a sense of exploration and engagement. At the top of the custom timber trail the design transitions into a compacted decomposed granite pathway with boulder edging, leading users to timber seating.  This allows the space to include an embankment tube slide that runs directly back to the main playground area.

Taking advantage of the existing space, the playground was strategically positioned under natural tree canopies. This not only provides natural shade, but also integrates the play space seamlessly into the surrounding environment. The result is a playground that not only entertains but also respects and preserves the beauty of nature.

Inclusivity was prioritised with the strategic use of rubber surfacing throughout the playground. This not only enhances safety but also increases accessibility to key activities, ensuring that children of all abilities can enjoy the space.

Austek Play stands as a symbol of innovation in the world of playground design, creating spaces where children can thrive in harmony with their natural surroundings.
