COFFEE AMONG THE FLOWERS
18 Mar 2020
Starbucks has embraced the green trend with a greenhouse-style coffee house opening soon in Tokyo that uses a combination of light and sound to display digital flora in every season.
The new Starbucks joint is planned to open in spring to coincide with cherry blossom season. In addition to the digital flowers, the café will also be decorated with rows of flower beds and an abundance of real plants including begonias, fuchsias, petunias, geraniums and bellflowers.
Covering a total length of 60 metres, the branch uses 20 projectors and 18 speakers to create the spectacle. Four to six times a day the café will go dark and the digital flora and fauna will be projected across the space creating an immersive audio-visual experience.
Set across 1500 square metres, the branch will open at the new Hana Biyori Greenhouse that is run by Yomiuriland, one of Tokyo’s most popular amusement parks. On the southern terrace are beautiful flower fields, while the western terrace offers a glimpse of the nearby Japanese garden with its two imposing bodhisattva statues and a 17th-century pagoda. Also onsite is the Hijirimon Gate, which was once part of the Kyoto imperial palace.
There are also two large aquariums housing 1200 colourful fish across 50 species. An 8-metre tank is filled with colourful corals and saltwater fish from Okinawa while a 3-metre tank is filled with rock formations and greenery. There will also be an otter enclosure and a rotation of workshops when the greenhouse opens.
