In 2017, Lake Macquarie City Council embarked on an upgrade of The Boulevarde, located in the town centre of the lakeside suburb, Toronto. The original landscape structures were becoming derelict with age and Council wanted to bring the street into the modern age, giving the area a new sense of identity. Old fig root systems coursed under the existing intrastructure, causing further damage to the buildings from below.

Council wanted to introduce new trees but they also wished to create a space that could “support hardscaped areas and provide a long-term root zone for the street trees to avoid concrete uplift problems in future,” said Corey Milton from Lake Macquarie City Council.

Council opted for Citygreen’s Stratavault system, which provided enough strength to support the concrete slabs while still allowing for space below the trees to generate root growth and become established with the environment.
