AWARD-WINNING STORMWATER INNOVATION AT ORANGE MEMORIAL PARK

04 Mar 2025

The Orange Memorial Park Stormwater Capture Project in south San Francisco is a groundbreaking example of how sustainable water management can address urban environmental challenges.

Completed in 2021, this state-of-the-art infiltration gallery from Atlantis Corporation is designed to capture, treat and recharge millions of gallons of stormwater each year, providing significant benefits to both the local community and the natural ecosystem.

HOW IT WORKS

Stormwater runoff is collected and filtered through an advanced system that removes pollutants before the water is either returned to the San Francisco Bay or stored underground for future use. This innovative approach reduces urban flooding, enhances groundwater replenishment and improves water quality, making it a model for sustainable infrastructure projects across the country.

A MODEL FOR THE FUTURE

Urbanisation and climate change are increasing the demand for resilient water infrastructure. Projects like the Orange Memorial Park Stormwater Capture System demonstrate how smart water solutions can help cities adapt to changing environmental conditions while conserving precious water resources.

This initiative sets a new standard for integrated water management, supporting biodiversity, reducing stormwater pollution, and contributing to a more sustainable urban environment. As more communities look for ways to secure their water future, this project serves as a blueprint for success.

IMPRESSIVE IMPACT

  • 130 million gallons of clean water returned to the bay annually, helping to maintain a healthier aquatic ecosystem.
  • 55 million gallons of groundwater recharged each year, strengthening local water security.
  • 15 million gallons conserved for irrigation and non-potable use, reducing reliance on freshwater supplies.

AWARD-WINNING RECOGNITION

This project has been widely celebrated for its innovation, efficiency, and environmental contributions, earning multiple prestigious awards, including:

  • 2022 Project of the Year – APWA Silicon Valley
  • 2022 Environment + Parks Award – APWA Silicon Valley
  • 2022 Outstanding Stormwater Capture & Use Project – CASQA
  • 2022 Outstanding Environmental Engineering Project – ASCE San Francisco

Atlantis is proud to be part of this transformative effort, showcasing the power of innovation in sustainable water solutions.
