ACE LANDSCAPE SERVICES AWARDED FOR DELIVERY OF ALTONA BEACH PROJECT

A bustling summer destination, Altona Beach received a major upgrade as part of Hobson City Council’s Open Space Strategy, in partnership with the Victorian Government’s Suburban Revitalisation and Coastal Protection programs. A requirement to raise the pre-existing sea wall catalysed the opportunity for major changes to the esplanade along the foreshore creating better access paths and more green space. This was achieved by replacing the road with a widened pedestrian zone between Pier Street and Bent Street and redirecting traffic to create a connected recreation zone with the adjacent Weaver and Logan reserve, promoting year-round use.

Works included a new pedestrian and cycling promenade, an upgraded sea wall with new entry points to the main swimming beach, improved lighting, a range of public amenities including custom wave inspired seating with shading, a decked sunbathing and seating terrace, various road and landscape enhancements, and the installation of an irrigation system.

The project was delivered in 2 stages to allow community access to the beach during the summer months. Key elements of stage 2 were incorporated into stage 1 allowing the works to be completed ahead of schedule.

ACE’s scope of work included:

• Demolition of existing paving, light poles and the old sea wall
• Relocation of nominated furniture and sculptures
• Installation of various amenities and seating zones including new custom furniture, misting/water play area, beach showers and picnic shelters
• Construction of two raised timber platforms
• Installation of new concrete paving and light pole upgrades
• Construction of a new sea wall, connecting to existing infrastructure
• Installation of an irrigation system, as well as sewer and drainage work
• Landscaping soft works, including planting new garden beds and trees
