A Green Transformation

In the lead-up to the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, the public spaces that surround the Eiffel Tower are set to undergo an ambitious and exciting redesign. Dubbed One Line, the masterplan will see the development of a thriving green corridor that aims to address crowding issues and improve the environment, atmosphere and entertainment values of the iconic landmark.

The London-based studio, Gustafson Porter + Bowman, won the competition for the Site Tour Eiffel project with their green corridor vision.

One Line will see extensive greenery added to both sides of the Eiffel Tower that feature new parks and pools to increase aesthetic and biodiversity. "One [side] evokes the union of two historic landscape typologies: classical French gardens, characterised by major axes that express power; and French picturesque gardens, as places of artistic experimentation," said Gustafson Porter + Bowman. "In this urban landscape, green routes and gardens reserved for creative pursuits frame and soften the central axis."

The planting scheme of One Line will create a green corridor for the Palais de Chaillot at the Place du Trocadéro and the École Militaire at the Place Joffre. An amphitheatre will feature at the Trocadéro and additional public space will be added around the Varsovie Fountains.

The area at Pont d'Iéna will be transformed into a green bridge and the Champ de Mars will feature two new public squares and raised lawns.

Trees will be planted in the new parks in an attempt to improve the biodiversity of the area. This is in line with Paris’ aim to hold the most sustainable Olympic Games yet as part of the city’s commitment to tackling the global climate crisis.

The first stage of One Line aims to be completed in 2023, in time for the Olympic Games in 2024.
